Background Information:
The Lake Merritt/Uptown District Association is a 501(c) 3 non-profit Community Benefit District (CBD) committed to revitalizing the heart of Downtown Oakland, California. Efforts include district maintenance, increased security, and community and cultural enrichment. The Uptown/Lake Merritt District seeks to foster an environment where businesses thrive, art flourishes, and residents and visitors alike can enjoy all that downtown Oakland has to offer.
Last summer, property owners in both Downtown Oakland and the Lake Merritt/Uptown districts voted by a margin of almost 8 to 1 to support a voluntary property tax to fund services that would improve the quality of life in their respective communities. The associations meet and function jointly. Services funded by this new district include maintaining cleanliness and order in the public rights of way, improving district identity and advocating on behalf of the area property owners, business owners and residents.
The Lake Merritt/Uptown Community Benefit District is comprised of 37-block area, which will generate an annual budget of approximately $1.1m from collected assessment fees. The Downtown Oakland Community Benefit District is comprised of 19-block area, which will generate an annual budget of approximately $904,000. During this first year, both districts will generate almost 2 million dollars to fund these special benefit services.
